How Long Does it Take to Create a New Website in Australia?

Creating a new website is not just a matter of money; it also is a matter of time.

Interestingly, 85% of our customers need their website urgently!

What do you think about its reason? People would like to implement what they have in mind quickly, so they cannot tolerate losing time for building a website they need. The fear of losing the market to their competitors may be another reason which makes people want their website to be up and running soon.

Consequently, the timeframe of a website building project becomes very crucial for most customers. However, the question is, how long does it reasonably take for a website to be completely implemented?

There are different kinds of website service providers in Australia such as local companies, freelancers & solo traders. The type of the service provider you decide to work with and the type of website you are after, are crucial factors affecting the project timeframe. Below you will find the most effective elements on the project timeframe:

  1. What kind of website developer are you dealing with?
  2. Will the web-design company make the website from scratch or use a template?
  3. How many unique pages do you have?
  4. Which CMS do you want to be used?
  5. Do you have your contents ready?

What kind of website developer are you dealing with?

As we mentioned before, there are three types of web-design builders in Australia. If you are dealing with a locally registered company, you can make sure that everything will go as planned. These companies have experience and flexibility to match your needs with the timeframe. They will give you an optimised timeframe considering your website complexity and features. The time frame might be different, depending on the type of website you request, but they will be committed to their schedule. You can trust them.

If you deal with freelancers, the scenario would be complicated. They are usually from a foreign country with no local support in Australia. You should know them personally to trust them, otherwise, you might lose your time and money.

The other choice would be deciding to deal with a sole trader which can be a good option, however you cannot expect a complicated web design from a sole trader as even a multitask person would not be able to provide a perfect service in every aspect. Hence, it is always a better idea to rely on a team instead of a person.

Will the web-design company make the website from scratch or use a template?

We talked about the template and theme websites versus custom websites in the “web design cost in Australia” article. It is always recommended to build custom websites, as you will face SEO standard problems, loading issues and low score, if going with a template. You check our SEO Services in Australia for more information.

However, if you have decided to use a template, its advantage is that it takes almost one-third of the custom-designed website’s time to be built.

How many “unique” pages do you have?

The number of total pages doesn’t affect the web design project time frame, though, it is important that how many unique pages you are supposed to build. For example, if you are selling laptops, you will create a page template for all of your products, then you enter the data for each laptop separately.

In this case, you don’t need to build a page for each laptop separately. So, if you want to estimate how long it takes for your website to be completed, you should estimate the number of unique pages you need on your website.

Which CMS do you want to be used?

If you are going to use an open-source CMS for your website, like WordPress, that would save a considerable amount of time! But if for any reason, you need to have a dedicated CMS, then a lot of time would be spent to build that type of website. To understand which CMS is appropriate for your project, you may read “Web design with WordPress or a dedicated CMS” article.

Do you have your contents ready?

Some customers think that website building includes content providing, which is a wrong assumption. Once your website is ready, you are responsible for providing and entering your website’s contents. However, you might want to work with the same company to create content in a separate project. Content entering can only be done after the website is built. However, preparing the content, which is very important and time-taking, can be organised in advance. In order to save time, we suggest you start creating and gathering your contents before or during the time the website is being built, if you are in a hurry to launch your website.

We recommend you read the “What is content marketing” article to understand the importance of the contents in your website.

Timeframe for each step of designing a website:

So far, we learned what elements affect the overall web design timeframe. Now we would like to talk about the timeframe of each step of the website creation project. To learn about the details of each step, you can read the “Website Design Services, from Scratch to Hatch” article in Websima’s blog. Below, we would just list each step and the relevant time frame needed for each to be done:

  1. Understanding the project and its purposes: 2 days to 2 weeks
  2. Writing a proposal as a project executive plan: 1 day to 4 days
  3. Visual identity and content priority: 2 days to 2 weeks
  4. Graphical design: 1 week to 3 weeks
  5. Coding the website considering the SEO standards: 1 week to 6 weeks
  6. Test and quality check: 2 days to 2 weeks
  7. Training & moving to the domain: 1 day to 3 days

As outlined above, the minimum time needed for a web design project would be 22 days, while the maximum time needed would be up to 20 weeks. However, in some rare projects, the process might take even longer.

Finally, how long does it take?

Till now, we talked about the factors that should be considered and the steps you should go through and the relevant time needed for each step to be taken, in your journey of building your website. Now, to be more specific and clear, we will estimate the time needed for implementing a website based on four categories we had discussed before, in “Web design cost in Australia” article. We will consider custom web design only, as we do not recommend using templates for your websites.

A typical company website would take around 35 days up to 65 days depending on its features

A typical eCommerce website with basic features would take around 45 days up to 85 days

  • More complicated eCommerce

An eCommerce website with unique features like creating designed receipt, or inventory management may take around 65 days up to 95 days

  • A complicated website

If you want to create Amazon number 2, that would be a different story. The timeline of such a website would be more than three months with no doubt. However, depending on its complexity and CMS, it may even take up to a year for mega projects.

In Websima, we give you a project schedule in our proposal to which we would guarantee the highest level of commitment and meeting its deadlines. There are also some other great companies in Australia, however be careful that the proposal you receive is realistic. Don’t trust the timeframes that are too good to be true.
